Summer Snow Hummingbird Trumpet (Zauschneria)

Formerly called Zauschneria, this group of plants, now called Epilobium canum, have become staples in waterwise garden circles thanks to their long duration of bloom, unfussy nature, and exceptional appeal to hummingbirds. Epilobium canum ‘Summer Snow’ retains all those beloved characteristics of the more common reddish-orange flowered forms of this species but flowers in a much mellower white. As a result, this plant blends more naturally with a wider range of color palettes, including cool tones and cottage garden pastels where its laid-back, weed-suppressing form is a natural fit. Like other Hummingbird Trumpets, ‘Summer Snow’ excels at bed edges where its rhizomatous underground growth can run along a hard surface, like flagstone and pavement edges. Despite its ability to smother weeds and spread by underground stems, Epilobium canum remains a good bedmate for medium and large perennials and all shrubs thanks to its short stature.
